Airtel Africa launches Starlink Mobile in DRC

The development brings satellite connectivity closer to everyday mobile users, particularly those living or working in remote areas where building conventional telecommunications infrastructure can be difficult and expensive.

Airtel Africa has become the first telecommunications operator in Africa to commercially deploy Starlink Mobile, opening a new chapter in satellite-powered connectivity on the continent.


The service was launched in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on August 14, 2026, allowing Airtel customers with compatible smartphones to connect in areas beyond the reach of conventional terrestrial mobile networks.

The development brings satellite connectivity closer to everyday mobile users, particularly those living or working in remote areas where building conventional telecommunications infrastructure can be difficult and expensive.

Unlike traditional satellite internet services, customers do not need a satellite dish, specialised equipment or a separate device. Compatible smartphones can connect directly to Starlink satellites where there is a clear view of the sky.

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, has a satellite-to-mobile constellation of about 650 launched satellites and supports light-data applications, including WhatsApp messaging and SMS.

For businesses operating across the vast DRC, the technology could provide an additional communications layer for workers and assets moving beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.

Transport and logistics companies, mining operations, farmers, humanitarian organisations and health workers are among those expected to benefit.

The service could also prove valuable during emergencies, natural disasters and temporary disruptions to conventional telecommunications infrastructure.

Connecting beyond the network

Airtel Africa chief executive officer Sunil Taldar described the launch as a significant milestone in the company's partnership with SpaceX.


“By combining Airtel’s terrestrial network with Starlink’s satellite technology, we are extending essential connectivity beyond the limits of conventional mobile infrastructure,” Taldar said.

He said the DRC launch would provide experience that could support the progressive expansion of the service across Airtel Africa's markets, subject to country-specific regulatory approvals.

The launch follows a strategic partnership between Airtel Africa and Starlink announced in December 2025.

The companies subsequently tested Starlink Mobile data and messaging services in Kenya in March 2026. The DRC has now become the first Airtel Africa market, and the first country on the continent, where the technology has moved from testing to commercial deployment.

For Airtel, the development offers a way of extending the reach of its network without relying exclusively on the construction of additional terrestrial infrastructure.

For customers, it potentially changes the meaning of mobile coverage.

A mobile phone that previously became useless after leaving a terrestrial coverage area could, with compatible technology and service, remain connected through a satellite network.

A business opportunity in remote Africa

The commercial implications could be significant.

Africa has large areas where low population density, difficult terrain and high infrastructure costs make conventional network expansion challenging.

Satellite-to-mobile technology offers operators another way of reaching customers in such locations.

In the DRC, where geography and the sheer size of the country create particular connectivity challenges, Airtel DRC managing director Theirry Diasnoma said the service would provide an additional layer of communications for people beyond the reach of conventional infrastructure.

“Our country’s size and geography mean that many people live, work and travel beyond the reach of conventional mobile infrastructure,” Diasnoma said.

He said the service would help customers remain reachable and connected in areas where terrestrial coverage is unavailable.

For companies, connectivity can have direct economic value.

A transport operator needs to communicate with drivers and track operations. A mining company needs reliable communication between remote sites and management. Health workers need to remain in contact with colleagues and facilities. Humanitarian organisations operating in difficult terrain need communications when conventional infrastructure is unavailable.

Farmers and rural communities could also benefit as satellite-to-mobile technology develops beyond its current light-data capabilities.

The technology could therefore become more than a consumer communications service. It could evolve into part of the infrastructure supporting remote economic activity.

Starting with basic connectivity

The initial service is deliberately limited compared with conventional mobile broadband.


Starlink Mobile currently supports light-data applications, including WhatsApp messaging and SMS.

Customers in the DRC require a compatible LTE Android smartphone, an active Airtel DRC data bundle or data roaming switched on.

Apple devices are expected to be supported in the future.

Eligible customers can register through the MyAirtel App for a free introductory 30-day trial. Customers travelling to the DRC and joining Airtel DRC can also register after activating an eligible service and downloading the application.

After the introductory period, customers will access Starlink Mobile through eligible Airtel data bundles.

This model places satellite connectivity within Airtel's existing customer ecosystem rather than creating a separate satellite service requiring specialised equipment.

That could be important for adoption

One of the barriers to conventional satellite connectivity has been the cost and complexity of equipment. A service that works through an ordinary compatible smartphone removes much of that burden.

Competition and the future of connectivity

The launch also highlights the changing competitive landscape in telecommunications.

Mobile operators have traditionally relied on towers, fibre and other terrestrial infrastructure to expand their networks. Satellite companies are now offering another layer.

Rather than necessarily replacing mobile networks, satellite-to-mobile technology could complement them.

Urban and densely populated areas will continue to depend heavily on terrestrial networks, while satellite connectivity could fill gaps in remote locations and provide backup during emergencies.

The combination could make networks more resilient.

For Airtel Africa, the technology also strengthens its positioning as an operator willing to adopt emerging technologies to address connectivity challenges.

The company said it would continue developing the service with Starlink, with additional capabilities expected as the technology evolves and regulatory approvals are secured.

Beyond the DRC

The next question is where the service goes from here.


Airtel Africa operates across multiple African markets, creating the potential for satellite-to-mobile connectivity to eventually become available in other countries.

But expansion will not be automatic.

Each market has its own telecommunications regulations, spectrum arrangements and licensing requirements. Airtel has said expansion will therefore depend on country-specific regulatory approvals.

The experience gained from the DRC deployment could provide the operator with practical lessons on customer demand, network performance, regulation and the commercial model.

For Africa's telecommunications sector, however, the significance of the launch goes beyond Airtel.

The continent is entering an era in which connectivity is no longer defined only by where the nearest mobile tower stands.

For someone working in a remote mine, travelling across an isolated road, providing medical services far from a town or responding to a disaster, the sky itself could increasingly become part of the communications network.

Airtel's Starlink Mobile launch in the DRC is an early commercial step in that direction.

If the technology scales as expected, Africa's next connectivity revolution may not be built entirely on the ground.
