Accountants urged to embrace technology as 31st ICPAU Annual Seminar opens

The 31st Annual Seminar of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) has opened in Entebbe with a call to accountants to uphold vigilance, professionalism and integrity as they continue to play a critical role in providing oversight to businesses and government.
Opening the annual gathering on Tuesday in Entebbe, ICPAU President CPA Timothy Ediomu urged accountants to remain alert and professional in the execution of their duties, noting that the profession carries a significant responsibility in promoting accountability, transparency and sound financial management.
The Seminar is running under the theme: “Transforming Institutions and Lives for Sustainable Growth. Ediomu emphasised that accountants are not merely responsible for preparing and reviewing financial information, but also serve as an important line of oversight in both the private and public sectors.
He called on professionals to exercise independence and sound judgment, particularly at a time when businesses and government institutions face increasingly complex financial and regulatory environments.
“As we gather for this year’s edition, we need to think beyond the numbers and embrace the changing role of the accountant. Accountants must continuously enhance their knowledge and skills so that they can effectively respond to emerging challenges and maintain public confidence in the profession,” Ediomu, ICAPU President, noted.
In his keynote address on “Transforming Institutions and Lives for Sustainable Growth” CPA Patrick Ayota, Managing Director, National Social Security Fund (NSSF), challenged professionals to rethink how they approach institutional growth.
He urged finance professionals to look beyond costs and numbers and work more closely with marketing, customer service and other teams to understand customers, identify their needs and create greater value.
Henry Musasizi, Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development in his address noted that as the profession evolves, accountants must embrace technology, strengthen their skills and uphold the highest standards of integrity to remain trusted partners in Uganda’s economic transformation.”
Discussions at the seminar are expected to provide participants with an opportunity to share knowledge, examine emerging trends and explore ways of strengthening the contribution of the accounting profession to Uganda's economic development.
The opening of the 31st ICPAU Annual Seminar comes at a time when accountability and effective financial oversight remain central to efforts to strengthen institutions, improve business performance and safeguard public resources.
Ediomu's call therefore places accountants at the centre of efforts to promote responsible financial management, reinforcing the need for professionals to remain vigilant, ethical and committed to the highest standards of their profession.
