Over 50 islanders at the Kananansi landing site, Mulabana Parish, Bujumba sub-county in Kalangala district, have been left homeless as heavy rain accompanied by heavy winds blew their houses away.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the storm that started on Tuesday at 5 am as islanders were still asleep.

Richard Ssejitta, one of the affected residents, narrated that as he was asleep after returning from fishing on Lake Victoria at 4 am, the last he heard was his house fly away and immediately, rain-soaked his bed.

“I lost consciousness, I didn’t know where to run since it was dark but my neighbour saved me by pulling me into his room,” says Ssejitta.

Sylvia Nakakeeto another victim narrated that her house fell on her with her four children however, they were not injured since residents swiftly came to their rescue.

“Our appeal to the disaster office is to help us with some relief including iron sheets and tarpaulins so that we can reconstruct our houses,” she said.

A tree also fell on Muhammad Bukenya’s vehicle number UAN 557G, which has been acting as an ambulance at times.

Ssalongo Vincent Kayondo, the Kananansi landing site leader, called upon district legislators to avail some relief for the tentative replacement of the affected houses.

“The situation economically is not good among islanders and this makes them vulnerable. Let Hon Julius Mukasa Opondo the Bujumba legislator and Helen Nakimuli make a quick response as we wait for the disaster management office,” he said.

This is the second incident in a period of one month. In the first, heavy winds and rain ravaged crops, and houses, killed animals, and destroyed boats in Kabanga-Maboga village, Kacanga and Ggunga landing sites, Betta Town, Mwena, and other parts of the district.

Area councilor Harriet Nalubega appealed to the Office of the Prime Minister for a quick response on the matter.
