Land conflicts, Alcoholism and theft escalate domestic violence in Uganda

According to the Police spokesperson Fred Enanga similar incidents have been recorded in Buvuma Islands on Lake Victoria.

A wave of harrowing domestic violence incidents has left communities in Uganda reeling in various regions, with several lives tragically lost or forever changed. 

These include the Rukungiri's horrific panga attack.

In Rukungiri, Amos Tumworobere, also known as Gift, is on the run after he allegedly used a machete, hacking to death his wife, Annet Kyomugisha, on the night of October 11, 2023.

The gruesome attack took place at the home in at Kateramo trading center, Kikongi parish.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the couple had lived together without any notable conflicts since February 2023.

 “The victim's lifeless body was discovered by her four-year-old son, Anderson, who alerted a neighbor, Shillah Kemigisha. Whereas the main suspect remains on the run, detectives who rushed to the scene recovered the murder weapon.

According to the Police spokesperson Fred Enanga similar incidents have been recorded in Buvuma Islands on Lake Victoria.

In the forests of Buvuma, a domestic misunderstanding turned fatal as Majod Malekwa allegedly hacked his 40-year-old, Asia Nalumansi, to death with a machete on October 10, 2023.

Close sources said the couple had gone to inspect some land when the dispute erupted at 10:00 on Tuesday. Malekwa abandoned his wife's lifeless body. The 45-year-old suspect now in police detention hails from Mittium LCI, Bweema sub-county.

 Step-mother's murder

In Naggalama, Mukono district, Yusuf Kyeswa, is in custody for allegedly hacking to death his stepmother, Kevina Nakanwagi.

“The deceased suffered multiple injuries including deep cuts on the head. Kyeswa disposed of the body by dumping it in a pit latrine at Nakyeeke village, Kayiri parish, Mukono district,” said Enanga.

The motive behind this gruesome crime arises from sh3m, which the victim's father had entrusted to her after selling land worth sh20m, Enanga revealed.

Murder by the River in Fortportal

In Western region, Fortportal community witnessed the strangulation of a 42-year-old boda rider, Peter Mwesige, according to Enanga.

“His lifeless body was transported on two motorcycles by suspects Winnie Kobusinge and Bernardo Musinguzi, who subsequently abandoned his motorcycle by the river bank,” Enanga said.

 Mwesige’s body was later retrieved from the river Mpanga.

Grandmother's tragic assault

In Greater Bushenyi - Bushenyi Central Police station, a 23-year-old named Richard Byaruhanga is on the run after reportedly assaulting his 96-year-old grandmother, Anyosi Tiberebwa.

The suspect whom relatives say had earlier complained of a headache attacked his grandmother and threw her down on the floor. The impact caused trauma resulting in instant death. 

Enanga, says a similar incident was recorded in Mityana, central Uganda. A man only identified as Kibuuka is in the dock for allegedly attempting to murder three people, namely: his father, Fred Mugerwa, his sister Christine Nakanjako, and a neighbour, Zaveri, who tried to intervene after a fight broke out in Mugerwa’s home.

 “The suspect claimed that his father and sister had not shared the proceeds from land they had sold,” said Enanga.

The incident occurred on October 14, 2023, and the police recovered the machete used in the attack.

The Police publicist (Enanga) said the cases in the five regions are majorly linked to theft, land disputes and others orchestrated under the Influence of alcohol among others.
