The Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety says they have diverted traffic off Masaka-Kampala highway.

The development follows partial damage on the Kyengera and Buddo junction following heavy rains, which caused the road to sink in on Sunday morning.

"You are thus advised to use the alternative routes," said a statement issued by Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for the directorate.

For motorists from Kampala heading to Masaka, police have recommended the Nakawuka Road -Budo junction or Kitemu to access the Kampala-Masaka highway.

Other alternatives include the Mityana Road-Buloba-Nsangi to access the Kampala-Masaka Highway.

For motorists from Masaka to Kampala, police have recommended the Kitemu or Budo-Nakawuka to access Kampala.

Alternatively, one can use Nsangi-Buloba-Mutyaba road to access Kampala.

"We thus appeal to the public to exercise the utmost discipline & patience as the teams from Traffic Police & UNRA assess the damage," he said.

The country is facing above-normal rains due to the onset of the rainy season causing damage to infrastructure and disruption of human activities.

In Butaleja in eastern Uganda, floods cut off the Mbale-Butaleja road while five schools were closed.
