Uganda joined the rest of the world to commemorate World Teacher’s Day at Kololo Independence grounds in Kampala on Thursday (October 5, 2023)
This year, the celebrations are being dedicated to the issue of teacher shortage in the country with the aim of revamping their numbers to promote sustainable education.
According to the Ministry of Education and Sports, the day is a form of support to teachers in Uganda and ensuring that they have the needs that future generations will benefit from.
This year’s World Teachers' Day theme is: "The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage."
“To put the importance of stopping the decline in the number of teachers and then starting to increase at the top of the World Teacher’s Day is celebrated to recognize how education is an inspiration of hope and a catalyst for change in our world.”
President Yoweri Museveni and the Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni presided over the celebrations.
World Teachers' Day is an international day held annually on October 5 to celebrate the work of teachers. Established in 1994, it commemorates the signing of recommendations by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) Secretary General, Filbert Baguma in a recent address highlighted the need to increase funding in the sector, to make the teaching and learning process more convenient.
