Participation in national cleaning is everyone's responsibility
A clean and healthy Uganda cannot be achieved by government alone. The National Cleaning Day provides an opportunity for communities to take collective responsibility for their surroundings, improve sanitation and protect the environment for present and future generations, writes Ogullei Kenneth Timothy

The National Cleaning Day, launched on July 23, 2026, emphasised that a clean Uganda is everybody’s responsibility, and this mandated every last Saturday of the month from 7:00–10:00am as time for cleaning. As such, the government instituted a total ban on the movement of persons, vehicles, as well as motorcycles during the cleaning period. There were Exemptions that apply to genuine emergency vehicles such as Ambulances, Fire and rescue services and security operations. The government appealed to all citizens that the exercise is mandatory for everyone to participate in the cleaning activities to improve public health.

In compliance with the directive, citizens participated in the exercise, thereby joining community members in sweeping surroundings, collecting and disposing of garbage, unclogging drainage channels and slashing overgrown bushes in a bid to promote sanitation. This is a timely call because of the social and environmental benefits; moreover, national cleaning speaks more to the Sustainable Development Goals, for example, SDG 11, which talks about sustainable cities and communities and SDG 13 on climate Action for sustainable development.
This is a call for all citizens to take part in making cleaning every citizen's responsibility and participate in the National Cleaning Day to harness the benefits. This will sustain our communities through improved sanitation and environmental sustainability.
