Sylvester Nsubuga Wamala, the brother of the late Archbishop of Kampala, Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, was Saturday installed as his heir at Kyabakadde in Mukono district.

He was installed by the Mamba clan leaders before a Mass led by Lwanga's successor Paul Ssemogerere.

Wamala lived in the US.

At the same function, the clan leaders also installed the heiress of Lwanga's niece, who died recently.

Priests from different dioceses and parishes attended the function, as did Buganda prime minister Charles Peter Mayiga, Buganda's Prince David Kintu Wasajja and wife Marion Nankya, politicians, among other people.

Ssemogerere said his immediate predecessor at the helm of Kampala Archdiocese had responsibility in his family: he was the heir to his late father, Joseph Wamala Nsubuga, who died in 1983.

Lwanga died in April 2021 at the age of 68.

On Friday, Lwanga's sister, Rose Namutebi Lukwago, said he was not only their eldest brother but also the father figure of the family.

"Our father passed on when some of us were still young, but our elder brother Lwanga was there for us in all situations together with our mother, Matilda Nakkonde," she said.

"As a family, we have to pass over the responsibility to another person.

"We thank Archbishops [Augustine] Kasujja and Ssemogerere for standing with us, and all in Luwero and Kampala who consoled us.”

Typically, last funeral rites mark the bereaved family's end of mourning period.
