Prisons depleting forests to feed prisoners

According to Byabashaija, the high cost of electricity makes it inevitable for prisons to rely on fuelwood for cooking. The prison’s department spends sh 3.6 billion towards the purchase of firewood annually.

As the prison population increases at an annual rate of 10 percent, more trees will have to be cut in the future to prepare food for inmates, the Chief Jailer observes.
