GULU - Gulu District has passed an ordinance on maize production and trade in Paicho sub-county.

The ordinance aimed at promoting proper organic farming practices, including plant thinning, weeding, use of fertilisers, harvesting, post-harvest handling, and the use of recommended weighing scales, was passed on May 28, 2025, during an emergency district full council meeting held at Gulu District Council Hall.

Presented to the council by the LC5 councillor for Palaro sub-county, who also doubles as the district secretary for production, marketing, and natural resources, Michael Komakech, the ordinance requires maize millers to register with the district council.

It also regulates agro-input dealers, maize storage facilities, transportation and also has some sections on contamination issues, offences, and penalties.

Komakech emphasized that the ordinance will help to prevent contaminated maize products caused by chemical use, and all stakeholders in Paicho should embrace it.

Paicho chairperson Charles Okello said the community sensitisation on the ordinance shall be carried out across the seven parishes at an appropriate time.

Meanwhile, Butangatira LC5 councillor Balington P’Ongwec asked the brains behind the ordinance to consider extending it to cover the entire district.
