KAMPALA - Meteorologists in the Ministry of Water and Environment have cautioned farmers against planting crops due to the current rainy season.
According to them, the rains being experienced in various parts of the country don’t signal the onset of the actual planting season.
Instead, farmers should wait for the seasonal weather forecast to be released on Friday next week. The explanation was made by George William Omonyi, from the meteorology department in the ministry.
In a telephone interview conducted on Thursday, Omonyi said that the current rains are a result of a failure in the weather system to hold back water.
He, however, advised sorghum and millet farmers to plant, explaining that these two crops can thrive, even when the sun comes back.
Recently, the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, Frank Tumwebaze, who, through his X handle, called on farmers to prepare their gardens as they wait for "planting rains".
