The government cattle compensation and restocking programme has officially commenced in Kapelebyong district, bringing renewed hope to households that lost livestock during past cattle raids.

Kapelebyong district chairperson Jackline Ajego says beneficiaries whose details were verified by government have started receiving funds under the programme aimed at restoring livelihoods in affected communities.

Under the initiative, each approved household is entitled to receive sh5 million for livestock restocking. The programme is part of a government intervention that allocated sh80 billion to support households in the Teso, Lango and Acholi sub-regions that lost cattle during periods of insecurity.

Ajego urged beneficiaries to use the money for its intended purpose and avoid diverting it to non-productive activities.

She noted that the programme is intended to help families rebuild their livelihoods and improve household incomes through livestock production.

Funds are to be sent directly to beneficiaries through bank accounts or registered mobile money lines, bypassing intermediaries and reducing the risk of mismanagement.

Beneficiaries are first identified and verified at the parish level, with Parish Development Committees compiling lists of eligible households.

These are then consolidated by district authorities and submitted through the Ministry of Local Government before funds are released.
