State Minister for Works and Transport Musa Ecweru has assured Uganda that the repair works on Karuma Bridge, the major link to Northern Uganda will be completed on schedule.
He was at Karuma a day after his senior Gen Katumba Wamala announced the complete suspension of traffic flow on Karuma effective Monday for three months that the work goes on.
Calling for calm and cooperation, Ecweru acknowledged the economic and political effects of the temporary closure of the bridge made a few months ago but emphasized it for safety.
On Thursday, Ecweru on a field inspection visit to the bridge, hosted a number of legislators on a fact-finding tour of one of Uganda's key bridges.
The team included: Tony Awany, deputy chairperson of the parliamentary committee on physical infrastructure, Hilary Lokwang (Ik County), Nelson Lema Okello (Maruzi), all members of the committee, and project engineers.
At the legislator's request, Project engineers conducted a tour of sections of the bridge under repair and shared information about reconstruction plans.
Several MPs called for transparent and expedited repair works.
Chris Ongom, the vice chairperson LCV Oyam district, reiterated an earlier request from Kiryandongo leaders that the government reestablish the ferry service between Atura in Oyam district and Mutunda in Kiryandongo.
He emphasized that despite alternative routes through the park, Amolatar, and Apac, Oyam will remain isolated because many people commute daily to schools and hospitals across the River Nile.
Ben Oyunu Owilli, the Karuma Bridge project engineer explained the damages to the bridge and the remedial process.
Nelson Okello (Maruzi) noted that they witnessed serious work at the bridge.
