Makerere has emerged among the top 10 universities in Africa, according to a metric-based ranking of 14,131 universities from 183 countries.

According to EduRank, which says it utilises the world's largest scholarly papers database with 98,302,198 scientific publications and 2,149,512,106 citations to rank universities across 246 research topics, Makerere emerged 7^th in Africa and best in East Africa.

Edu rank, which released the rankings on February 29, 2024, says: "Makerere University ranked 1st in Uganda, 819th in the global 2024 rating, and scored in the top 50% across 122 research topics". 

"Makerere University ranking is based on three factors: Research output (EduRank's index has 21,641 academic publications and 422,183 citations attributed to the university), non-academic reputation, and the impact of 143 notable alumni," Edurank says.

Mbarara University of Science and Technology, which emerged 95^th according to the ranking, is the only other Ugandan university that made it to the top 100.

Other top varsities in Uganda that followed in the 2024 rankings include Kyambogo University (147), Kampala International University (154), Gulu university (position 183) and Uganda Christian University (190).

Makerere University was ranked ahead of Kenya's University of Nairobi in the survey by EduRank to emerge as top university in the Eastern Africa region.

Continentally, the top 10 universities in Africa according to rank are:

4. University of Pretoria
5. Cairo University
6. University of KwaZulu-Natal 
7. Makerere University 
8. University of Nairobi 
9. University of Johannesburg 
10. University of South Africa 

However, it should be noted that there are other organisations that rank universities around the world. These rankings are likely to be different because of the parameters that each organisation uses to rank the higher institutions of learning.
