The media fraternity and electoral officials are mourning the passing of Teddy Mugote, a veteran broadcaster and former public relations manager at the Electoral Commission (EC).
A statement from the family of the late Sebastian Mugote of Buyala village, Budondo sub-county in Jinja city confirmed her death.
Mugote worked with Radio Uganda and Uganda Television between 1984 and 1994, before joining the Electoral Commission in 1995, where she served until the early 2000s.
After her tenure at the commission, she turned to training and mentorship, lecturing aspiring journalists at the Crane Media Institute in Wandegeya, Kampala, from 2010.
She studied at Kampala High School before enrolling at Makerere University, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication between 1996 and 1999.
A requiem mass was held on Sunday, September 21, at her ancestral home in Buyala village, Budondo sub-county, followed by an overnight vigil. She was laid to rest on Monday at the same location.
Her son, Alexander Musombi, told New Vision on Monday, September 22, 2025, that his mother had been battling stage four pancreatic cancer. She was admitted to the Uganda Cancer Institute, Mulago Hospital, where she fought the disease for three months before passing away.
He thanked the public for the overwhelming support towards the burial arrangements and appealed for continued assistance.
Colleagues and friends remembered her as a mentor and trailblazer. “This is sad. My big sister Teddy has gone too soon. May her soul rest in peace,” said Jabwelli Okello, who worked with her during her career.
Mugote leaves behind a legacy of service in the media, public communication and the training of journalists.
