Uganda risks losing a prime property in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over the Government's failure to pay $433,582 (sh1.679b) in rental taxes.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vincent Bagiire, told the Parliamentary Committee on Presidential and Foreign Affairs on Wednesday that despite several warnings issued by the host nation, Uganda is yet to meet its tax obligations.
“We have a very serious and burning issue in DRC. As you know we have a commercial building in DRC, they collect Non-Tax Revenue and that revenue is remitted to the consolidated fund. However, there are rental taxes which we pay, which the Mission hasn’t been paying for a considerable period of time and this is to the tune of $433,582. (Shs1.679b),” Bagiire said.
He said the country risks losing this particular property after authorities wrote to Uganda.
“We have written to the Secretary to Treasury. I have had a number of meetings with him in this particular regard and these resources haven’t been released,” Bagiire said.
