Sarah Babirye Kityo, the president of the Uganda Netball Federation, who stands accused of fraudulent false accounting in connection to sh186m, has been granted bail.

Grade One Magistrate Christopher Opit, on December 1, 2023, approved Kityo's release on a cash bail of sh7m. Her sureties were bonded at a non-cash value of sh60m.

Additionally, the court ordered Kityo to deposit her passport and certificate of title. She requested to surrender her passport on December 6, as it is currently with the British High Commission for travel preparations.

Kityo’s lawyer, Joseph Luzige, argued that the sureties presented by Kityo were substantial and compelling enough to ensure her attendance at trial. He emphasised Kityo's reputable standing in society, asserting that she has no intention of evading trial.

Magistrate Opit expressed satisfaction with the presented sureties and subsequently granted Kityo bail.

The prosecution, led by Gloria Inzikuru from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, opposed the bail application, arguing that the presented sureties were insufficient.

The allegations suggest that Kityo and others, who remain at large, were involved between December and November in 2021 at the Uganda Netball Federation. They allegedly intended to defraud by providing false accountability regarding sh186m released by the National Council of Sports to the Federation for the pent series and African National Championship in Namibia.

The pent series aimed to enhance team rankings for participation in the 2021 Commonwealth Games. Kityo has denied the charge.
