The deceased have been identified as Suzan Alwedo and Peter Eringu, both Senior Four students.

New Vision visited Soroti Regional Referral Hospital where 24 injured students were rushed for treatment.

Two of the injured students were put on supplemental oxygen, while three girls had been booked into the theatre for further management.

The Midland High School director is also among the injured.

The incident occurred in the wee hours of Thursday morning, at about 3;00 am, near Awoja Primary School after the bus, registration number UG 1951E belonging to Busitema University, that the students were travelling in, crashed into a stationery trailer truck registration number UAQ 718 that was parked on the highway.

By press time, the total number of students who were travelling in the bus had not yet been established.

One of the relatives of the victims who spoke to Etop Radio said the students were travelling from their school in Kaberamaido to Masese Island in Jinja District, for a geography field trip.

The mood at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital was a sombre one as friends, relatives and teachers camped outside the surgical ward waiting for a word on the condition of their loved ones.

The Police are yet to issue a statement on the incident.
