The Police in Rukungiri District are still investigating circumstances under which a machete-wielding man was chased around the village until he was cornered and killed on the spot.

It is said the ‘bloodthirsty’ man was fleeing the village after cutting and injuring a businesswoman and her son. The businesswoman later succumbed to injuries in a nearby health facility while the son was still undergoing treatment.

The incident happened on Friday, September 08, 2023, at around 8:30 pm at Rwabwingi B Cell in Buhunga Sub-County.

According to a statement issued by Elly Maate, the Police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, the incident was recorded as double murder by cutting and mob, on CRB 1171/2023.

He explained that a man, who was later identified as Phillip Tumuramye, 28, a resident of the same village, attacked a businesswoman who owned a shop in the same area identified as Enid Ahumuza, 56, and cut her several times, demanding money.

It is said Ahumuza was sleeping and was only awakened by a stranger who broke into the shop while she was sleeping.

According to Maate, she made an alarm which attracted her son, Rogers Muramuzi but the attacker left the woman and turned against the son, inflicting serious injuries on him.

However, he too made an alarm that attracted neighbours, but the attacker tried to escape from the scene. They chased him down, overpowered him, killing him instantly.

Maate said the businesswoman and her son were rushed to Nyakibare Hospital, but Ahumuza died on arrival while her son Muramuzi was still undergoing treatment.

The area chairperson, Justine Bashaba informed the Police at Buhunga Police Station that later reached the scene and recovered the killer machete, which was stained with blood.

The two bodies of the attacker and businesswoman were both taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre III for postmortem as inquiries into the matter continued.
