“I am being sold by force to National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, but you never know, you may find me there,” Justice and constitutional affairs minister Norbert Mao has said.

Borrowing from a sermon by Bishop Godfrey Loum of Northern Diocese, Mao said he is like the Biblical Joseph who was sold by his brothers to the Egyptians.

He noted that, to the surprise of Joseph’s brothers, they found him in a top leadership position after they had been hit by famine in their home country.

“I do not care about my brothers who are selling me by force. I am a Democratic Party (DP) member. I am the President General of DP. I ask you my brothers that where I am is not bad at all. But when you pull me back, I have to fight using one hand to defeat my tribemates. Leave me to fight with two hands for the national issues. Stop the domestic fight,” he pleaded.

He cited the expiry of the amnesty commission which directly concerns the people of the Acholi sub-region as more former fighters of the Lord’s Resistance Army rebel return home with their families.

He was happy that the amnesty which had expired a couple of years ago has now been extended to two years to continue issuing amnesty certificates as an assurance of safety to the returnees.

Another pertinent issue the Minister talked about was the Transitional Justice Bill which lacked clauses on the war victims fund, national dialogue and reconciliation commission.

“If we can have funds allocated for roads why not the war victims? They ought to have an allocation annually in the budget. We must also have a mechanism where people come and speak about their itching issues with ease. So I have made sure these two clauses are added,” Mao added.

The Minister was a guest of honour during Bishop Loum's pastoral visit at Pupwonya St. Janini church of Uganda in Atiak parish, in Amuru district on Sunday.
