The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has condemned the attack on Lhubirira Secondary School in Mpondwe town council, Kasese district by suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels.

On Friday night, suspected ADF terrorists attacked Lhubirira Secondary School brutally murdering 42 people most of whom were students.

UHRC chairperson Mariam Fauzat Wangadya on Tuesday released a statement condemning these acts, saying they were unjustified, barbaric and criminal.

“Schools must be a safe and secure environment for learners, teachers and support personnel,” she said.

Wangadya added that under international humanitarian law, schools and hospitals are protected civilian facilities.

“Unfortunately, this safe space was violated by terrorists. We stand in solidarity with the bereaved families attacked and abducted by the terrorists and country at large,” she said.

Wangadya added that terrorism is not only a national, but also a global threat to democracy that requires a serious multipronged response.
