The movie Nambi, which had generated significant buzz on social media due to its exceptional visual quality, finally premiered at Metroplex Century Cinemax in Naalya, Kampala on May 30, 2023.

Directed by Peter Mukiibi, the short film is as an adaptation of the Ugandan folktale – Kintu and Nambi.

The storyline revolves around a heavenly goddess who defies her father, Ggulu, to live with a primitive caveman named Kintu on earth. Despite the interference of her troublesome brother, Walumbe, her youngest brother, Kayikuzi, goes to great lengths to protect her.

The event commenced with a glamorous green carpet experience, where attendees posed for pictures and engaged in interactive sessions, followed by dinner.

Subsequently, the audience made their way to the cinema hall, where they enthusiastically watched the movie, reveling in the captivating retelling of this folklore.

The occasion was graced by Buganda second deputy prime minister Robert Nsibirwa, who awarded sh5m to the movie’s creators.

During his speech as the chief guest, Nsibirwa recounted the history of Buganda, drawing parallels to the story and expressing gratitude to the movie’s makers for successfully translating the essence of the Buganda folktale into a visually compelling narrative.

“As we were growing up, we often heard the tale of Nambi and Kintu, but it remained a figment of our imagination. Now that you have transformed it into a visual format, I am delighted that this generation, as well as future generations, will have the opportunity to witness it,” Nsibirwa exclaimed.

He commended the film’s team for preserving the cultural and historical essence of the story while employing high-quality visuals and historically influenced Luganda language to bring the narrative to life.

Nsibirwa pledged that the Buganda Kingdom would provide unwavering support to promote the story and bolster the project.

Rinaldi Jamugisa, the PR & communications manager at MultiChoice Uganda, praised the team for delivering a superior product that has the potential to captivate the global market for Ugandan films.

“This remarkable story, conveyed with outstanding quality and simplicity, will showcase the world the capabilities of Ugandan filmmakers and open up international opportunities for Ugandan cinema,” Jamugisa declared.

The movie features a talented cast, including Doreen Nabbanja (Nambi), a news anchor at Urban TV, Bint Kasedde (Kintu), Jenkins Joel Mutumba, Moses Opio, and many other talented individuals and is produced by Usama Mukwaya and Dennis Arthur Abwakat.

 

“This remarkable story, conveyed with outstanding quality and simplicity, will showcase the world the capabilities of Ugandan filmmakers and open up international opportunities for Ugandan cinema,” Jamugisa declared.
