Mbarara City was relegated to fourth position in an increasingly competitive FUFA Big League after they were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) at Kakyeka Stadium on Thursday.

The Ankole Lions drop back by a point behind Kitara, NEC, and Police and will have Henry Kitegenyi to thank for the point after the striker scored his 15th goal of the campaign, an equaliser at the start of the second half.

The visitors had taken the lead in the first half when the Mbarara City defence failed to deal with a teasing ball off a corner allowing Jonathan Ssewankambo to slot in on 25 minutes.

Kitara needed a late David Kasajja goal to beat resilient Lugazi FC to get back to the summit with on goal difference off NEC and Police who also got into the top mix following a 4-0 beating of Calvary FC.

With Sadiq Ssempigi’s men dropping to 4th position with 36 points, it all indicates a stiff challenge for promotion as the league goes 3/4rs of the distance to the climax.

“We did not get the results we wanted because we only came to life in the second half, but I thank the boys for the great effort, a point is not bad and we shall still keep up the fight because we want to get back to the top flight,” Said Ssempigi.

The boosting win that pushes them to 22 points, comes at the time the Ibanda-based side is having their third home game, a catchup game against Luweero United on Sunday.

Denis Omedi continued his chase for the golden boot after leading Booma FC to a 1-0 win away to struggling Soroti City, the result that also sees Booma move to 5th position on 27 points, ahead of Calvary on goal difference.
