When you put up a fence around your property, it will protect it from trespassers, land grabbers and provide security. 

David Kireli, a civil engineer says there are different types of fences. These include natural plants, chain links, bricks or blocks and a stone wall. 

“Most people fence their properties to demarcate their land,” he explains. 

According to architect Abdu-Wahab Nyanzi, it is not easy to estimate the cost of a fence given the type chosen. 

For example, some people have fences in swampy areas while others have them on slopes. Some are in rocky areas, among others.

Stone wall

Fred Lukoda who has been in the construction industry for 13 years says stone walls are the best and strongest to install. 

“These stones are mainly made out of large blocks because they are used to form the first layer of the foundation when you start building.”

Metal grills

According to David Katamba, a structural engineer, this type is made of a wall with metal grills on top. 

“Welders make metal grills and they come in different types and designs. They can be strong if they get good maintenance like painting. If you are to have a wall and metal grills, first, the wall forms the foundation for the fence and the metal grills increase the wall height, some people put up barbed wire on top of metal grills.”

Brick walls

If you are to use bricks, they come in different sizes and shapes. Some are made from mud or clay and others from concrete.

Wooden fences

Katamba says these are made using wooden posts or poles and there is space left in-between. The materials used are timber, blocks, and steel rods and these are usually not more than 100cm or 120cm high.

Ornamental fence

These fences, have elaborate designs and are usually metallic.

Hedge with wire netting

Katamba says that this is a type of fence with a chain-link or wire poles.

Bamboo

Kireli says this kind of material is cheap, but prone to fire outbreaks because materials such as grass and papyrus reeds are used, but it can give your home a tropical feel.

Hedges

Hedges are used in compounds, and some are used to fence off gardens. 

Susan Gitta, a compound designer, says hedges are natural fences (plants) and they should be trimmed and watered.

Chain link

These are made from wire mesh with the support of concrete posts.
