US-based Ugandan powerlifter Roy Mubiru made history on Saturday by becoming the first Ugandan to qualify for the World’s Strongest Man competition to take place in Dallas, Texas in June.

Competing in the heavyweight, Mubiru (110kgs) did the dumbbell press, timber carry hub, tire flip (300kgs), press medley and farmers walk (240kg) to qualify at the event held at the Spring Fling, Peabody, Massachusetts.

“First of all, I’m proud of myself for having become the first Ugandan to achieve such a feat. I have made my country proud as well and it shows that I continue to excel at the highest level in ‘strength sport’,” Mubiru said.

“I feel so happy because I have made history and I hope this can inspire the youth and those with a passion for powerlifting and related games, only that the government has not yet come out to appreciate us as they had promised; but for us, we continue shining and making an impact for the country,” Mubiru stated.

Mubiru will now concentrate on ensuring he puts up another great show in the event that has events such as loading race, squat lift for repetitions, fingal's fingers, overhead medley, pickaxe hold and truck pulling.

“I’m temporarily going to be off powerlifting because; a strong man requires a lot of energy and a lot of training,” Mubiru noted.

The 2022 World’s Strongest Man will be the 45th edition of the competition that tests the participants’ power and endurance over different obstacles.

Mubiru last competed in the APA National Championship held at the Steel Beach Gym in Connecticut last year.

He lifted a total of 1828kgs from the three attempts each of the bench press, squat and deadlift weight training exercises.

Competing in the 40-44 years drug-tested raw category, Mubiru lifted 200, 220 and 230kgs in the squats, 140, 155, and 157kgs in the bench press and 230, 245, and 251kgs in his specialty ― the deadlift ― to lead the 20-plus competitors in his category.
