The national fuel quality compliance rate currently stands at an impressive 99.4%, with minor incidents of fuel adulteration reported. Experts from the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development have confirmed the achievement.

Solomon Muyita, the spokesperson for the energy ministry stated in an interview with New Vision on Tuesday that the fuel marking exercise that is implemented by SICPA at Uganda’s borders has effectively eliminated instances of fuel dumping and smuggling.

"In the past, we frequently encountered cases of fuel dumping by unscrupulous companies. However, since the introduction of these measures, these issues have been successfully addressed," Muyita explained.

He further emphasized the government's proactive efforts, stating, "We regularly conduct inspections of fuel stations nationwide, apprehending and prosecuting anyone found guilty of selling adulterated fuel."

In a recent statement to media, the UNBS reiterated its commitment to monitoring fuel stations in the eastern region, ensuring their compliance with quality standards.

Peter Kitimbo, the UNBS Field Supervisor, highlighted their use of technology to track and apprehend non-compliant dealers.

“We are using SICPA's technology to track and apprehend non-compliant dealers who engage in smuggling, transit product dumping and adulteration. Illegalities in the sector cause losses to the government and consumers," Kitimbo said.
