Bwera division Police in Kasese district are holding a 17-year-old schoolgirl over accusations of strangling her newly born baby boy.

Masika, a senior four student at Hill Side Senior Secondary School in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha town council, reportedly strangled the baby immediately after giving birth to it.

Karambi sub-county LC3 chairperson Paddy Muhindo on Tuesday said Masika Edirne reportedly wrapped the dead body in clothes, placed it in a basin at home and later proceeded to class.

“It was found covered in a heap of clothes and under her family bed,” Muhindo said, who added that Muhindo lives with her grandmother.

He said Masika’s grandmother, Jane Biira while searching for the basin to use to go and collect coffee, found it under Masika’s bed and alerted the horrifying incident to his office.

“We rushed to the school, picked the girl and took her to Police at Bwera,” Muhindo said.

Masika and her alleged unnamed husband were being held at Bwera Division Police for further investigation. 

Kasese senior education officer Kulthum Masika Moshi said scores of girls impregnated last year had returned to school under the go-back-to-school campaign.
