KAMPALA | INSECURITY | YOUTH

Maj. Charles Kabona, who is the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) First Division spokesperson, has said idleness among people is fueling insecurity in Uganda.

"If someone is unemployed, they threaten the community." "But if they are employed, the insecurity is limited in the community,” he said.

On Wednesday, he addressed Kasagati market vendors, bodaboda cyclists, taxi operators, and veterans, among others, at Kasangati Muslim Primary School.

Kabona urged youths not to engage in crime "because this can destabilize your future and that of the country."

He said the army continues to carry out raids targeting rebels in different parts of the country.

"Security is a common good, and everybody needs it despite the location of their ethnicity."

Kabona said the older generation, too, has a role to play by educating, informing, and telling stories of what transpired in the previous years when Uganda's security was under threat.

Hadijah Namyalo Uzelye, the personal assistant of the National Resistance Movement's (NRM) national chairperson, said that the government releases huge amounts of money annually to fight poverty, but many youths are still unemployed.

“Government officials and agencies need to be audited as soon as possible," she said.

"We need to know who is swindling this money because it is our mandate as citizens of Uganda to demand accountability,"

Uzelye said they intend to make a case for bodaboda cyclists by petitioning the Government on their behalf on ways to boost their livelihoods.

Frank Kyazze, the Kasangati deputy resident district commissioner, said the Mperwere-Kiteezi-Gayaza Road is in a sorry state, adding that it is the same road the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) trucks use while heading to the landfill.

"If this road is worked on, we shall at least know that we have also benefited from the NRM party just like the rest of the people," he said.
