KAMPALA - Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are the leading cause of infertility, Dr. Gozanga Andabati a Fertility, IVF and Laparoscopy Lead Specialist at Bethany Women’s and Family Hospital has said.

The belief among most people that infertility is largely caused by public toilet infections is not true, Dr. Andabati maintained. 

“Infections from bedrooms and guest houses as a result of extra-marital affairs is to blame,” he said.

According to him, Sexually Transmitted Infections like gonorrhoea, or syphilis are the cause of infertility. 

He was speaking at the Bride & Groom Expo at UMA Show Ground in Lugogo, Kampala on Sunday, July 31, where he focused on demystifying infertility. 

Avoiding infections 

Dr Andabati explained that the leading cause of infertility among women is tube blockage caused by Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). 

He said four out of 10 women facing infertility challenges are faced with tube blockade.

Dr. Andabati said people must practice proper sexual behaviour. 

“Avoid sex until you are ready. Also, use condoms. But most importantly stop having extra-marital affairs. You need to avoid unwanted pregnancies because abortion is a risk for tube blockage,” Dr. Andabati said.
