MASAKA - The headteacher of St. Jude Primary School in Nakasozi, Budo, has named some of the victims of a fatal accident that happened along Kampala-Masaka highway on Monday, June 27.

The accident that happened at 6:30am at Nakasozi involved a Sino truck that carries construction materials registration number UBH 815V, Toyota Raum UAW 997R and two motorcycles under a popular brand, Bajaj Boxer.

Harriet Nabbosa, the headteacher, identified the victims as Francis Ssekamatte, a Primary Seven candidate who died on the spot and Florence Nakalembe, his sister and classmate.

She clarified that it was Ssekamatte, 16, and not her 14-year-old sister who perished in the accident as we had earlier reported.

Nabbosa, who said a sombre mood had engulfed the school after the accident, stated that they rushed Nakalembe to Mulago National Referral Hospital after she received first aid at the Central Central Medical Centre in Kyengera, Wakiso district.

Their yet-to-be-identified boda boda rider who was taking them to school also remained in a critical condition at Mulago Hospital.

Police confirm

Faridah Nampiima, the Assistant Superintendent of Police and spokesperson of the traffic directorate, confirmed the hit-and-run accident.

“One male juvenile (Ssekamatte) who was travelling on motorcycle registration number UEW 672J died on spot, while two other victims were taken to hospital to get treatment,” she said, without naming the victims.

“The accident is attributed to the driver of Toyota Raum registration number UAW 997R who while joining the road knocked down the motorcycles and pushed them towards the Sino truck,” she added.

Mother aghast

The mother of the two named victims, Rose Mbaryowere, was aghast at the same fate which had befallen the children’s father.

Mbaryowere, a resident of Mugongo A zone in Kyengera, said in an interview that this accident occurred when her children had just visited their bedridden father at Villa Maria Hospital in Masaka.

“I took them to visit their father and this accident has happened when we have just returned from Villa Maria Hospital where he is receiving treatment for injuries he also sustained in a road accident in Masaka recently,” she said.

She noted that the Masaka accident also happened when their father was riding his motorcycle to go and work.
