The Police in Kalangala district is investigating the circumstances under which one of the main buildings at Brovad Sands Lodge Beach was destroyed by fire on Monday night.

It is alleged that by the time the fire started, none of the staff was in the building though they suspect that there might have been a fault in the electrical wiring which might have caused a short circuit.

Eric Bukulu, the facility’s assistant manager, said the building contained a bar, restaurant, kitchen, football hall among others and that the fire had burnt everything to ashes.

"We don't have any firefighting equipment yet the building contained gas cylinders that fuelled more flames that destroyed everything," he added.

Baluku said they saw fire in the ceiling of the building which could indicate that it was caused by an electrical fault.

Sam Kwesiga, an eyewitness, said that by the time he arrived at the scene, the severity of the fire was beyond what any basic firefighting equipment such as fire extinguishers could deal with, which made them look on as everything perished in the flames.

In February 2022, fire gutted houses in Kalangala village, destroyed property worth millions as people looked on due to the lack of firefighting equipment.

In January 2022, a fire broke out at Nkose Landing Site leaving one dead and property worth millions of shillings destroyed.

Residents tried to put it out using water fetched from the Lake Victoria shoreline in basins, plates, cups and saucepans among other utensils.

James Nandu Mugoya who is in charge of community policing at Kalangala Central Police Station said Kalangala has no fire brigade which makes it difficult for the Police to put out any fire.
