Prof. Kyamanywa is 4th Vice-Chancellor of Uganda Martyrs University

In his inaugural speech, Prof. Kyamanywa pledged to work with all the stakeholders of UMU, to take the university to greater heights.

Prof. Patrick Edrin Kyamamywa, a famous professor of general surgery, has become the 4th Vice-Chancellor of Uganda Martyrs' University, Nkozi (UMU).

He was inaugurated during a colourful ceremony at the university’s main campus in Nkozi, Mpigi district, on Thursday.

The function was presided over by the Chancellor of the university (who is also the Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference and the Bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese), the Rt. Rev. Professor Joseph Antony Zziwa. 

The Bishop of Lira (who is also the Chairman of the university’s governing council), the Rt. Rev. Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok, the Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus to Belgium and Luxembourg, His Excellency Archbishop Augustine Kasujja, the Secretary General of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, Msgr. John Baptist Kauta, Rev. Prof. John Chrysostom Maviiri (the out-going Vice-Chancellor) and the university's Patron, Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere (the Ordinary of Kampala archdiocese) also graced the function.

As an act of installing Kyamanywa, Prof. Zziwa handed over to the latter several symbolic instruments of his office (such as the mace, the dummy key, the university charter and the university seal).

In his inaugural speech, Prof. Kyamanywa pledged to work with all the stakeholders of UMU, to take the university to greater heights.

Prof. Zziwa congratulated Kyamanywa on his installation and assured him of the support of the Uganda Episcopal Conference.

The beautiful musical performances of the university’s cultural troupes and the chapel choir spiced the function.

Kyamanywa's Brief Profile

Professor Patrick Edrin Kyamanywa, the newly-inaugurated Vice-Chancellor of Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi, is a professor of general surgery, a global health expert and a medical educator. 

He had his medical training at Makerere University and has been an international scholar in the UK and Germany. 

He holds an MPH from the University of Leeds; a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice and an MBA from York St. John University. 

He attended surgical training at Manheim Teaching Hospital of Heldelberg University in Germany. 

He is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy of the UK and the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa, where he is an examiner. 

He is a well-published researcher with an interest in Health Professionals' Education and Global Health and serves as a reviewer for many professional medical and surgical scientific journals.

Prof. Kyamanywa is a transformative leader with a long experience in higher education leadership and transformation at a national and international level. 

He is a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Kampala International University's Western Campus, Acting Principal College of Medicine and Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Rwanda.

Prof. Kyamanywa began his higher education career at the Department of Surgery - Mbarara University of Science and technology. 

He is a member of several academic and professional bodies and associations.
