Police arrest suspect in theft of sh317m from Movit director

The Police Flying Squad Unit have arrested a man suspected of stealing $90,000 (sh317.4m) from one of the directors of Movit Cosmetics Company.

According to Assistant Inspector General of Police Asan Kasingye, the operatives arrested the suspect from his hideout in Ibanda district.

“A total of $27,700 and sh97.8m was recovered from a hotel room he had hired in Mbarara city,” Kasingye, who is also the Uganda Police Force’s chief political commissar, revealed. 

However, details of how the robbery was carried out were not immediately available.

According to the 2020 annual crime report, there were 5,302 cases of robbery reported in 2020 compared to 6,761 cases reported in 2019.

Aggravated robbery of cash had a total of 364 cases in 2020 compared to 426 cases reported in 2019.

“A total of sh2.57b was robbed, out of which sh272.5m was recovered,” said the report.
