Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) president Moses Muhangi has won a second term unopposed.

His executive members also sailed through unopposed after Bruno Sserunkuuma, the returning officer for the forthcoming UBF elections confirmed the closure of the nomination deadline with no challenges in sight.

UBF elections are slated for February 5 in Kampala with Muhangi and his executive only waiting to be sworn in.

Simon Barigo, the UBF General Secretary has returned for a fourth term making him the longest-serving boxing federation executive member in the same seat.

Barigo made his debut as the UBF General secretary during Godfrey Nyakana’s reign in 2008.

He then returned under Kenneth Gimugu’s reign in 2014 before making his way in Muhangi’s first term in February 2018.

Other executive members who have returned unopposed are UBF treasurer Richard Muhumuza and Rose Kabwama, the head of women affairs.

Muhangi says his return at the helm of UBF shows how many boxing stakeholders entrust him to transform the sport.

“It is obvious, I have overachieved in my first term, we have won medals both local and at the international scene, we have managed to secure land for the federation under President Museveni directive, we have changed the face of boxing and soon we are bringing back its glory days, we have done so many things and it’s a no surprise member clubs unanimously decided to give me a second chance unopposed”

Muhangi however, refutes claims that he was unopposed because of the amended constitution that ousted many of his opponents who were vying for his seat.

Of them was Zana Boxing Club’s chairman Stephen Ssembuya, Nyakana, and Salim Uhuru, the Uganda Professional Boxing Commission president and Mayor Kampala Central division whose efforts to stand against Muhangi have been in vain after failing to meet the minimum qualifications to stand for the UBF presidency.

“Nyakana and his allies have to accept that their days in boxing elapsed three years back, they claim I made constitution amendments to lock them out which isn’t true, mind you, I'm not the first incumbent in sports to return unopposed, last year, we witnessed this in UOC elections and it has been the same case in many federations”

Since David Agong 1989-1999, Muhangi is the first UBF president to secure a second term.

Others including Hajji Issa Kamoga, Vicky Byarugaba, Rodger Ddungu, Nyakana, and Gimugu have only lasted for one term with others being booted out of office before their terms come to end.
