The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sport, Janet Museveni, is expected to attend the National Youth convention which is slated to take place tomorrow (Thursday, December 2).

The event that is organized by Uganda Youth Forum (UYF) and the Uganda Christian Lawyers’ Fraternity (UCLF), both local non-governmental organizations, takes place Thursday at State House.

John Osapiri, UCLF chief executive officer and chief organizer of the event, made the revelation during a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre Wednesday.

He said the convention will be hosted by Mrs Museveni under the theme: Entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship: emerging Critical skills for the 21st Century Youth.

“Due to the current Covid-19 situation, the conference will be a hybrid involving both physical and online participation. A smaller team of student and youth leaders will be hosted at State House Entebbe, and the other youth are encouraged to join through zoom and YouTube platforms,” Osapiri said.

Among some of the objectives of the convention is to sensitize and equip the youth in the areas of entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship; expose the participants to role models in areas of entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship for purposes of benchmarking, and further use the platform to mentor youth towards Godly values.

Entrepreneurship refers to the process of creating a new enterprise and bearing any of its risks, with the view of making a profit.

On the other hand, an intrapreneur is an employee of a company who works to create new business opportunities or products for the company in the style of an entrepreneur.

Osapiri said the conference will bring together distinguished speakers to mentor and equip youth on entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship.

Some of the speakers of the event include Mrs Museveni, Odrek Rwabwogo and Patience Rwabwogo (entrepreneurs), Paul Wafula of Inspire Synergy, Noah Walakira of Namirembe Sweaters and Abbas Mpindi the proprietor of Media Challenge Initiative.

Others include Charles Ocici, executive director, Enterprise Uganda; Patrick Ogwang, founder of Covidex; and Paul Muyinda Bilevu of Makerere University.

Also, to speak at the event are Jennifer Mwijukye, the CEO UNIFREIGHT; Gerald Otim of Ensibuko Agricultural; and ICT Initiative) Douglas Balikudembe of Kibo Foundation.

According to Osapiri, renowned gospel music singer, Pastor Wilson Bugembe, will attend the event as chief entertainer.

Uganda has some of the youngest populations in the world, with about 78 % under the age of 30, which poses a challenge in terms of unemployment, high dependency, violence and crime.

According to Leonard Imanashimwe, the deputy organizing secretary of the event, Uganda has the potential to address these problems.

“This can be done through being intentional in human capital development through skilling, retooling, attitude and mindset change and promoting education that touches the head, the heart and the hands. This convention, therefore, presents us with the opportunity not only to harness but also channel the abilities of our youth for economic development,” he said.

About the youth convention

The youth conference is organized by the UCLF and Uganda Youth Conference, founded by Mrs Museveni. UCLF and UYF have co-hosted the event since March 2021.

As a result of the said partnership, three stakeholders held the first inaugural virtual youth leadership Conference on ethics and integrity which took place on August 2021 at Kololo Independence Grounds, under the theme: “Values and Skills for the 21st century youth.”

The convention drew over 1,500 youth participants, both physically and virtually.

The convention provided an opportunity for distinguished and model speakers in the field of Christian leadership, integrity and ethics to share their wealth of knowledge and experiences with the youth.

“Following the success of the inaugural convention, parties therein will be holding the said convention quarterly, by the First Lady,” he said.
