The National Planning Authority has reported a decline of cases of COVID-19 in the neighboring countries, especially in Kenya and Rwanda.

Dr. Joseph Muvawala the executive director at the National Planning Authority said Kenya and Rwanda are still among the top ten countries in Africa that reported the highest new cases over the past three weeks.

Muvawala said that in the NPA model they project that for the week ending  October 2, 2021, Kenya will record a daily average of 365 and a weekly total of about 2,558 new cases.

He said that though still high, the trend of cases for Kenya is decreasing. Rwanda moved from 9th to 10th highest and the projections for the week ending October 2 are a daily average of 242, with a weekly total of about 1,695 new cases, which is not very different from the previous week.

“It is good news for Uganda that the cases in the neighbouring countries are going down but there is still need for great vigilance at the borders as the cases in many African countries are still high,” Muvawala said.

The NPA in the Weekly Covid-19 Case Projections is projecting an average of 133 new cases per day in Uganda and a weekly total of 934 for the week of  September 26 to October 2. For the week of 3rd to 9th October, a daily average of 131 new cases and a weekly total of 922 are projected.

The NPA said there is a stability of cases recorded per week being observed over the last week and the trend is projected not to change much in the coming two weeks. Though cases are generally low at a national level, there are some hotspots like Soroti, Kumi and Ngora.

On the continental outlook, South Africa has seen a significant decline in reported cases but remains at the top in the continent, with Morocco and Tunisia as the countries recording the highest number of cases over the last three weeks.

The top 10 countries in Africa have not changed but the numbers have generally declined compared to the previous week. The top 10 countries in descending order are South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Libya, Botswana, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya and Rwanda.

On the global scene, USA, UK and India recorded the highest number of new cases in the past three weeks: 2,901,237; 689,622 and 664,072 respectively.
