The Police have arrested two people over the death of a 9-year-old child in Rukungiri district in western Uganda.
Police named the detained as Danson Ampumuza, the child's biological father, and Barbara Ninsima, a stepmother to the deceased, who was identified as Mary Nimusima.
Both are residents of Kyeshero village in Nyabitete parish, Buyanja sub-county, Rukungiri district.
'It is alleged that on July 11, 2021, the stepmom assaulted Nimusima to death when her father was away. However, when the father came back and was informed about it, they (couple) hatched a plan, took the body and dumped it at Kyesero swamp,' Police said in a statement released on Sunday.
After that, Police said the couple reportedly reported the matter to the nearby police station, feigning ignorance of the whereabouts of the child. They reportedly proceeded to report the case of the disappearance of their child under vide SD 03/13/07/2021 at Marumba Police Station.
'It was on July 11, 2021, at around 19:00hrs when her body was discovered by Fabian Asaba and Benson Akandwanaho, both male juveniles, who had gone to cut papyrus from the same swamp,' the police said.
The area chairperson, Justus Kamuhamya, was alerted and he proceeded to notify the police about the matter. According to the police statement, the scene was visited by D/ asp Harriet Nasuuna and the body was retrieved and taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre lll mortuary, pending postmortem.
'On interrogating the two, that's when it was established that the child was murdered. Hence, the two were arrested. Inquiries underway,' said the police in a statement.
The case has been recorded as murder by assault under CRB 1128/2021
