The Amolatar District Women Millers group has applauded the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU), headed by Col. Edith Nakalema for the role it played in ensuring they recovered five maize mills that were donated by President Yoweri Museveni to uplift their economic welfare. 

The mills, located in Amolatar Town Council were donated by the President in 2010 and were installed in 2012 but they were diverted by former state minister for microfinance, Caroline Akao. 

But when the President was notified about the matter, he commissioned Col. Nakalema to follow it up, causing the arrest of the former minister, who was also the former District Woman Member of Parliament.  

Nakalema later directed Akao to de-register the mills and asked her to write a Memo to the Uganda Registration Service Bureau (URSB) indicating that she had withdrawn her interest. 

Nakalema asked the Uganda People’s Defence Forces engineering brigade, which refurbished the mills.

She later handed them mills to the women at a function held in Amolator Town Council. 

Judith Acana, the chairperson of the Amolatar Women Millers, who was accompanied by Molly Amera Ongol said the unit helped to restore peace back in Amolatar by handing back the mills. 

She said they had written several letters in vain until the unit came to their rescue.

According to Acana, the women are happy and they are actively engaged in running their projects, and that their financial statuses have improved since they got back the mills.

She, however, appealed to Nakalema to help them investigate another scandal sh800m belonging to Namasale Town Council SACCO, which she said was misappropriated by the management. 

She said the SACCO is located at Namasale landing site, but all the savings were misappropriated, and the police were reluctant to prosecute the culprits despite several complaints.  

Nakalema asked all women to emulate the Amolatar women, who she said became courageous, complained against the injustice, and worked together with her team to ensure they obtained information that led to the recovery of the mills.
