Dr Charles Ayume, the son of the late former Speaker of Parliament, Francis Ayume, used the occasion of his swearing-in as the new Member of Parliament for Koboko Municipality to remember his late father.

“It is 17 years since you went to be with the Lord on May 16, 2004. It is no coincidence that I take oath as MP on May 17, 2021. God’s timing can’t be disputed and only He knows why. You had a vision for Koboko, which I promise to continue, as well as uphold your values. For God and my country,” Charles Ayume said in a tweet shortly after swearing-in on Monday.

Francis Ayume who also served as the Attorney General, died in a motor accident on May 16, 2004, in Nakasongola along the Kampala-Gulu Highway.

A lawyer by training, Francis Ayume entered Ugandan elective politics during the 1990s, and he was elected to represent Koboko district.

From 1998 until 2001, he served as Speaker of the House during Uganda's Sixth Parliament (1996–2001).

In 2001, he was appointed Attorney General and represented Uganda in the International Court of Justice in a case where Uganda was accused of invading DR Congo and allegedly plundering its natural resources.
