PARLIAMENT

As the swearing-in of MPs-elect entered a second day, legislators who have just been sworn in have pledged to front the interests of their electorate in the 11th Parliament.

The function kicked off on Monday, with 131 MPs taking the oath on the steps of Parliament on the day.

Some of them spoke to New Vision about their plans shortly after being sworn into office. Improved service delivery emerged as one of key interests for their voters.

"I expect to be a watchdog for my people while in Parliament," said Christine Kaaya Nakimwero, Woman MP of Kiboga district.

"I want to use the 11th Parliament to lobby for increased youth opportunities for the youth and the women in Kiboga district."

Dominic Mafwabi Gidudu, the MP for the elderly (eastern region), promised to ensure that the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) for the elderly is increased to cushion the senior citizens on a monthly basis.

He said that the current sh25,000 (per month) is not enough to cater for the needs of the elderly.

"First of all, the age should be reduced. Eighty (80) years is too high and the money they get should be increased to cater for their needs," said Gidudu.

A total of 132 MPs-elect were scheduled to be sworn in on Tuesday.
