NIC Netball Club sent out a statement of intent with their 65-27 victory over Uganda X Luweero at the Police Children’s School on Saturday.

It was an occasion worth waiting for as Uganda Netball Federation’s crème de la crème took on the newly promoted Luweero side in a game that attracted quite the crowd.

“NIC was in their element early against their opponents but Luweero refused to roll over, giving back as much as possible. They lost their way as the game went on but they finished the match well enough.

“We only played in the second division for two years and we are already in the top division. This is as a result of some commitment and now that we have had our first match in the main league it calls for hard work and now I am going to ask the girls to double their effort,” Luweero coach Raymond Lubwama stated.

NIC captain Joan Nampungu was vehement that the team had done well especially since they haven’t played since 2019.

“We are very ready to defend our title because we have a group of good players who can deliver the goods. The beginning is always not that good but we have managed to rectify our mistakes,” Nampungu said.

Nampugu believes the court conditions hurt her side but they were still able to get the all-important win as the pitch dried up.

Makindye Weyonje also turned up the style against UPDF in their opening game of the season with a strong win against the army side.

Weyonje started their assault early, winning the first quarter 8-7. They built on that performance with every quarter to win the match 47-36.

In the grand scheme of things, Weyonje has shown everyone what they are capable of and their intention to become one of the better teams in the league was proven on Saturday.

The rest of the competition will resume on Saturday with KCCA and Posta expected to play the week after.
