KAMPALA - Bugangayizi East MP Onesmus Twinamatsiko has implored the government to take action against illegal sand mining in the country.
Raising the issue as a matter of national importance, the MP said continued sand mining in different parts of the country has resulted in environmental degradation of wetlands, sources of water for residents and habitats for aquatic animals especially in Kakumiro district.
According to the MP, more than 16 wetlands in the area have been highly degraded due to the use of harmful methods for sand mining, which he said pose high risks to the locals, especially the children who drown in the sand ponds.
In response, state minister of environment Beatrice Anywar promised to investigate the matter by sending a team to establish the facts before any action can be taken.
