The Kilak South MP, Gilbert Olanya, has described President Yoweri Museveni's long stay in power as God's plan to consolidate the country's peace.
Olanya, a Forum for Democratic Change party member, said the role Museveni has played in ensuring peace cannot be underrated. He said that is why Uganda is respected worldwide.
Olanya made the remarks during the passing out of 230 Special Police Constables (SPCs) at Opo-lacen Community Primary School in Amuru recently.
The opposition MP added that Uganda has remained peaceful for many years, but also ensured stability of other countries such as Somalia and South Sudan because the President takes issues of security as a priority.
"Mzee has his good side, even if we say he has rigged elections, you never know it is by God's plan so that he can remain in leadership," he said.
Olanya, also a former member of the defence and internal affairs committee, added that even at Parliament, when it comes to approving budget allocations for the defence ministry, they approve it fast due to its importance.
Olanya urged the SPCs to execute their core duty of protecting the election exercise, adding that there are some people who have intentions of disrupting the process.
Detect crimes
Osborn Oceng, the Amuru Resident District Commissioner (RDC), told the SPCs to be in the community as eyes of the Police.
Oceng said crime has reduced in the district due to community policing. He advised the SPCs to observe a high level of personal health to guard themselves against COVID-19.
The RDC promised that those who exhibit a high level of discipline and have the required academic qualifications will be enrolled into the mainstream Police.
Emmanuel Bwabale, the district Police commander, said the trainees underwent introduction to the origin of the Police and community policing, among others.
