A senior consultant gynaecologist/obstetrician at Mulago National Referral Hospital, Dr Charles Kiggundu breathed his last on December 29.

At 55, Dr Kiggundu a former president of the Association of Gynaecologists of Uganda (AOGU) had served as a gynaecologist/obstetrician at Mulago national referral hospital for the last 25 years (since 1985).

Dr Kiggundu has only worked in Mulago and Kawempe hospital all his entire life.

"He studied in Mulago Medical School, did his internship at the same school, remained there as a resident student. Later worked at Mulago hospital and became a consultant and later senior consultant," says Professor Daniel Kaye a senior consultant gynaecologist/obstetrician and a member of AOGU.

"We shall greatly miss him because he has been one of the dedicated members of the association. Initially, he was a treasurer before he became a vice president and later was appointed as a president of the Association.  In addition, he headed many projects," Prof. Kaye notes.

Dr Imelda Namagembe, who is the current president of the association describes Dr Kiggundu as a great clinician who was doing his work in a calm and humble manner and at times with a lot of laughter.

"He taught and mentored so many and has been a pillar in advocating for better reproductive health services. He will greatly be missed by the entire country. Fare thee well Charles," says Namagembe.

Flora Kisembo a former patient describes Dr Kiguddu as hard-working, a committed consultant who also created light moments; made jokes amidst treatment sessions to divert patients from painful episodes.

Dr Kiggundu collapsed while on duty at Kawempe hospital on December 29.

Upon examination, his saturation was found to be at 30%.

He was put on oxygen and rushed to Mulago hospital where he died while being wheeled into Intensive Care Unit (ICU) late in the evening.
