PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS
National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi will resume his campaigns today after breaking off temporarily following a series of events that saw three journalists - including one on his team - injured and the death of his private bodyguard, Frank Senteza.
Senteza, who died on Sunday in Busega in an incident that has stoked controversy, was buried at his ancestral home in Villa Maria, Masaka district on Monday.
NUP claimed he died after being run over by a military vehicle. The army, through spokesperson Brig. Flavia Byekwaso, responded by saying that he "fell off a speeding car Reg No UBF 850Z (drone)" that he had tried to jump on to.
Meanwhile, Police want his body exhumed to allow for a post mortem examination to enable them "classify the cause of death and the nature of injuries" Senteza sustained.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said in a statement that NUP supporters had frustrated their efforts to access the body for an autopsy before interment.
They are now seeking to have Senteza's body disinterred for examination.
"We have now started the process of obtaining a court order to exhume the body of the victim for postmortem analysis, to classify the cause of death and the nature of injuries. The initiative is also a great opportunity for our task teams of investigators to make sure all the different parts of the investigations are completed," said Enanga on Monday.
Following this series of events, the NUP campaign held a press conference on Tuesday to give an update on their next move.
NUP's vice-president for Central region, Mathias Mpuuga, told reporters at the party's head office in Kamwokya, Kampala that Kyagulanyi is set to get back on the campaign trail.
Today, he will be in the island district of Kalangala.
"Our presidential candidate will resume the campaign trail and I want to tell the people in the islands that we are coming to you," said Mpuuga, who also represents Masaka Municipality in Parliament.
Better known as Bobi Wine, musician-turned-politician Kyagulanyi is in a presidential race that features 11 contestants, including his closest challenger and the incumbent, Yoweri Museveni of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
The contest has one female candidate Nancy Kalembe and the youngest ever presidential candidate in Uganda, 25-year-old John Katumba. They are among the nine first-timers in this race to the State House.
And with the January 14, 2021 elections less than three weeks away, momentum is growing in the various camps.
