Museveni to commission Kira—Kasangati—Matugga road

Once completed the road will improve traffic flow within and around Kampala and Wakiso easing connection to the trunk roads especially Bombo and Jinja Highways.

KAMPALA - President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will Tuesday (December 29, 2020) evening officiate at the groundbreaking for the construction of Kira-Kasangati-Matugga road.

Once completed the road will improve traffic flow within and around Kampala and Wakiso easing connection to the trunk roads especially Bombo and Jinja Highways.

The Kira- Kasangati- Matugga road is part of the outer ring road network to the north of Kampala City. 

It starts at Kira town roundabout running west-wards crossing the Kampala-Gayaza road in Kasangati and ends at the Kampala-Bombo highway.

Uganda National Roads Authority Media Relations Manager Allan Ssempebwa noted that the project will also contribute towards improvement of the safety of the non-motorized road users through the provision of the cycle lanes.

He noted that the project will serve to address the central objectives of the Government of Uganda, namely, poverty eradication and economic development.

Chongqing International Construction Corporation (CICO) will be the main contractor while Professional Engineering Consultants Ltd (PEC) in a joint venture with KKatt Consult Ltd will be the project consultants.

The Project scope entails upgrading of the Kira-Kasangati-Matugga road together with the Najjera-Buwate spur and the loop connection of the family access road from gravel to bituminous standard. 

It also entails dueling of the 2km road section from Kyaliwajjala to Kira from the current 2 lanes to 4 lanes with a median and provision of walkways and cycle lanes.

Improvement of junctions which entails; upgrading of the 5 junctions which is part of the scope of the works and they include; Kitetika junction along Kampala-Gayaza road, Mpererwe junction along Kampala-Gayaza road, erisa junction and Gayaza junction along Kampala-Gayaza road. It will also entail

Improvement of the junctions that are along the project road and they include; Kyaliwajjala junction, Kira, Kasangati and Matugga junctions, design and construction of junction with all side roads along the Kyaliwajjala to Matugga road for a length of at least 20m and lastly, signalising of the junctions at Kwaliwajjala, Kira, Kasangati and Matugga.

Ssempebwa noted that the acquisition process is ongoing and is being managed by the UNRA In-house Team.

"A total of 4.3km of the right of way have been acquired (representing 23.8% of the total road length), however, this is affected by 5 metres extra land take on both sides of the road which is to be acquired by February 2020," Ssempebwa added.
