85 babies delivered on Christmas at Kawempe

KAMPALA - Kawempe Specialised National Referral Hospital, a component of Mulago National Referral Hospital has delivered 85 babies on Christmas day.

By press time 30 more mothers were still in the labor ward awaiting delivery.

Juliet Ayebare gave birth to her baby girl on Christmas at the same Hospital.


Mercy Bantia the in charge of the maternity ward said of the 85 babies 30 are boys whereas 55 are girls and no sets of twins.

She explained that 20 of the mothers delivered by Caesarean section while others were normal deliveries.

"We thank God all our mothers and their babies are in good conditions under monitoring. Many of them will be discharged by end of the day," Bantia said.

Saudah Nantongo gave birth to a baby boy.


She however said they have had a challenge of patients and their caretakers not keeping their masks on to prevent COVID-19.

"Many of the patients think COVID-19 is not real, leading to carelessness when it comes to observing Standard Operating Procedure," she added.

Juliet Ayebare a resident of Kyebando who gave birth to a baby girl at 6 am on Christmas said she prayed to God to give birth on Christmas day, for her child to share a birthdate with Christ.

"I am going to name my Child Noeline Agaba, I hope she preaches the gospel of Christ to nations when she grows up," Ayebare said with a smile.

Rosette Nakungu, also mother said giving birth to her baby girl normally is the best gift she could ever receive on Christmas.

"I want to bring up my child well into a generous person just like Jesus with whom they share a birthday," she said.
