The Alliance for National Transformation presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, has lashed out at the Government over what he called the misuse of the armed forces.
Addressing people of Serere district where he held a second rally after one in Katakwi district, Muntu said it was not in order for the Government to deploy the army on lakes.
The army is currently deployed on Lake Kyoga to curb illegal fishing, but they have come under criticism over the violent approach of handling the offenders.
"Deploying the army on the lakes to control fishing areas does not make sense. The army is trained for war not for enforcement of law and order or enforcement of good fishing on lakes," Muntu said.
He wondered why the Government involved the army yet Kenya and Tanzania, which share Lake Victoria, have not deployed soldiers.
"Kenya and Tanzania do not use the army, they instead use civil means in enforcing the regulations of fishing. So the problem we face on Lake Kyoga is because the regime is not caring about the methods it uses to settle any issue,"bMuntu said as people cheered him on.
Muntu, who requested the people of Teso to vote for him, said he is honest and a man of integrity that will not disappoint Ugandans if he wins the coming elections.
"Trust in us so that we build a new foundation on which this country can be managed well so that those who come after us will find the country already fixed. It will be on track regarding good governance," Muntu said.
Accompanied by Alice Alaso, the party acting president, who is vying for the Serere district Woman MP seat that she previously held before losing it to minister of state for fisheries Hellen Adoa, Muntu pleaded with Serere people to vote Alaso. Muntu said Alaso is an honest and tested leader.
He also campaigned for Angelina Osege, the independent Woman MP candidate for Soroti district, saying she is an honest leader that Uganda needs.
Muntu told the people of Teso that it was high time Iteso voted out President Yoweri Museveni because of his failure to fight corruption, nepotism and poverty.
"Let him retire and choose among the 10 of us in this race. I also urge you to scan us well but as ANT we shall not be drunk on power," he said. Muntu boasted of having served as army commander of Uganda with a clean record.
He met the National Unity Platform candidate Richard Mukalu in Ochapa town council, where he was also scheduled to address his supporters.
Mukalu agreed to drive a few metres away to allow Muntu the venue.
