KAMULI - President Yoweri Museveni has said his working relationship with the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga is on good terms, dismissing talk of a rift between the two leaders.

Addressing delegates at a scientific campaign meeting in Kamuli district on Saturday, Museveni, also the National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential candidate, said the two leaders had resolved any outstanding differences they once held.

"If I am against Kadaga, why do I have to hide? It's an insult to me to say that. Whatever issue I have had with Kadaga, we have discussed it and resolved it," Museveni stated.

He appealed to party leaders to embrace dialogue to resolve differences instead of grudge matches which create an unnecessary diversion, which can be exploited by ‘opportunists.'

"I don't believe in quarrelling because we are not working for ourselves. We are working for Uganda and Africa.

Some people come in with other aims or personal motives, but you should always try to see how you bring people together," he stated

"I quarrelled with people like my friend Eriya Kategaya and Amama Mbabazi. They were unfair to me, saying that I was hanging on to power. But you know I am not interested in power. If we were after power, we were in government but resigned to go and fight Amin. How can you say that I am interested in power? You never know how people think.

The NRM leader said his defence was in form of victory at the polls, backed by overwhelming support from the people of Busoga.

Despite the disagreements, Museveni said he took initiative to reach out to his contenders and made peace with them.

"After that, I looked for Kategaya and asked him whether he was still in support of East Africa. He said yes. I said ok, whether you like me or not, you come and we work together."

"Kategaya came back and became deputy prime minister and minister for East Africa, and we worked. You know what Mbabazi said in the last election. We are now talking.

When you have differences, you have got opportunists who make money out of lies. They come and say Museveni does not support Kadaga," Museveni said.

Kadaga is the Woman MP for Kamuli, a position she has won easily since 1989. Kadaga, the national vice-chairperson for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is vying for the same seat with the vice president of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) vice president, Proscovia Salamu Musumba.

Museveni concluded his scientific campaigns in Busoga sub-region. He is scheduled to start campaign meetings in Ankole sub-region on Monday, starting with Mbarara.
