The NUP leader has drawn crowds at his rallies, but many of the people are not wearing masks, as Uganda continues to battle the raging coronavirus pandemic.

PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS

National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu voiced his presidential credentials at his first rally of Monday in Nakifuma in Mukono district, drawing a large crowd as Uganda continues to battle the raging COVID-19 pandemic.

Only a few people who attended the rally were seen wearing masks, hours after President Yoweri Museveni reminded Ugandans on the need to adhere to the measures put in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in his address to the nation Sunday evening.

At a time when the entire world is feeling the full force of the pandemic, Ugandans were urged to stick to the basics of wearing a mask, washing hands with soap and water and observing a social distance to stem the spread of the virus that has killed nearly 1.5 million people across the world.

As at 1pm EAT Monday, the latest figures from the health ministry, based on tests conducted on Saturday, November 28, 2020 show that Uganda recorded 201 new cases of coronavirus, from 823 samples tested, with no new death recorded.

This means that Uganda's cumulative confirmed coronavirus cases stands at 20,145 and the cumulative number of deaths to-date is 201. The cumulative recoveries are 8,989 (including 45 new recoveries).

Jubilant crowds were seen on the roadside along Karagi-Gayaza road as Kyagulanyi was en route to his rallies of the day.

Kyagulanyi stood on top of his vehicle as he addressed his first rally of the day in Nakifuma.

He had entered Mukono via the Gayaza-Kayunga  Road, attracting crowds in towns like Nakasajja, Ddumdu, Kalagi, Naggalama and Nakifuma. The Police allowed the NUP leader and his supporters to move through.

Only a handful of people in the crowd at the Nakifuma rally wore face masks amid concerns that such superspreader events could potentially cause the rise in coronavirus contraction.

Kyagulanyi, who is also the sitting Member of Parliament for  Kyadondo East, is contesting for the presidency with 10 other candidates.

Some of the NUP supporters at the rally made an attempt to shield their faces to minimise possible contraction of COVID-19.

It was a crowded rally in Nakifuma as Kyagulanyi, who is popularly known as Bobi Wine, delivered his promise to the people of Mukono.

Meanwhile, a vehicle that was reported to be part of the NUP presidential motorcade overturned in Nagojje.

The accident left as many as nine people badly injured. No-one died.

Later, there was heavy traffic jam on Jinja road as Police guided Kyagulanyi to use another route to facilitate the smooth flow of normal traffic.
